São Paulo FC is at the heart of a police investigation after two witnesses claimed former president Julio Casares withdrew, in sealed envelopes, roughly R$ 100,000 in cash from the club each month.

How were the withdrawals carried out?

According to statements gathered by the Civil Police, Casares received the money in bags and folders called “polionda”. Each envelope contained a receipt claiming it was for "promotional actions" or "ticket acquisition", yet no records confirm those actions took place. Amounts ranged from R$ 100,000 to R$ 118,000, always delivered sealed in vacuum‑packed plastic.

What is the financial scope of the alleged irregularities?

The task force identified 35 withdrawals totaling R$ 11 million between January 2021 and November 2025. In addition, deposits of R$ 1.5 million into Casares’s personal accounts are also under investigation. In March 2026, the Deliberative Council rejected the 2025 accounts, flagging almost R$ 7 million with no documentary justification.

Why does this matter for São Paulo FC?

The lack of transparency could damage the club’s institutional credibility, a key factor for attracting investors and sponsors. São Paulo has only released a defense from Casares, who says everything is “regularly secured in the Club’s Accounting Department”. While the case proceeds, the board must manage pressure from fans and the media.

What happens next?

The probe continues with three active police inquiries. Prosecutors José Reinaldo Carneiro and Tomás Ramadan, together with delegate Tiago Fernando Correia, pledged to keep the “commitment to tell the truth”. If evidence confirms the misappropriation, Casares could face criminal and civil sanctions, plus possible fines for the club. São Paulo FC has yet to announce any overhaul of its internal controls to prevent future incidents.

Defense statement: Julio Casares, through his lawyer, sent a note asserting that the cash movements relate to at least 172 São Paulo matches across various competitions, and that all documents were properly filed.
